HE SAID he had consensual sex with the woman, but the judge did not buy that. Yesterday, Ong Mingwee, 29, was sentenced to seven years' jail and eight strokes of the cane for raping the then 22-year-old woman.

The self-employed man, who claimed during a nine-day trial early this year that the woman had consented to having sex hours after they met at Zouk disco in 2009, is out on $30,000 bail pending his appeal.

In her oral grounds of decision, District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim said she had serious reservations about his defence that there was consent.

'If she had consented, why would she call her mother - please come and get me? She wanted to go home,' said the judge, noting that the victim had also called her friend to come get her.

The mother had testified in court that her daughter, who had gone clubbing at Zouk, was crying and shouting over the phone in the early hours of Feb 12, 2009.

The woman's 23-year-old close friend had told the court that the victim sounded scared and told her repeatedly to take her home, but the victim did not know where she was.
