Huge fire breaks out at London block of flats

A MASSIVE blaze has broken out at a block of flats in east London.
By Tom Evans / Published 2nd July 2017

The roof of the Bow Wharf building appears to have been engulfed by flames at the scene near Bethnal Green and Mile End.

The block is described as a “residential waterside development” with five houses and 19 apartments which were set to sell for as much as £1million each.

Tenants were promised the building would be “finished to a high standard throughout”.

Crowds gathered to watch as eight fire engines were dispatched to put out the inferno in the unoccupied five-floor building.

London Fire Brigade confirmed that firefighters were called to a block of flats under construction in Mace Street, Bethnal Green, at 11.10am.

One local said: “Crikey, hope no one has moved in yet.”

A spokesman said 75% of the roof was alight.

Many have taken to Twitter in anger as the blaze raged in front of them.

A resident who lives in nearby block of flats Wharton House posted the footage on Twitter and called for their own housing association One Housing Group to take note.

It comes just a week after another fire in Bethnal Green.

London is in a heightened state of sensitivity after the horrific Grenfell Tower fire earlier this month.
