All systems ready for a smooth take-off - Tests show conveyor belts fully functional Less than a week before the official opening of Suvarnabhumi, transport authorities assured yesterday that all systems at the new international airport will function smoothly, including its conveyor belts which have proved to run with 100% accuracy. Key officials inspected the new airport located in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district yesterday. Among them was transport permanent secretary Wanchai Sarathulthat, who confirmed that the airport is ready for a smooth launch on Thursday. Mr Wanchai, also chairman of Thai Airways International (THAI), said all systems were running smoothly, especially the conveyor-belt system which usually posed the biggest concern at any new airport. In addition to the computerised baggage check-in system, notebook computers have been prepared as a back-up system in case of unexpected problems, he said. In the first three months of the airport's operation, THAI and Airports of Thailand Plc will also deploy staff to help passengers go through the check-in process. Suvarnabhumi now serves some domestic and international flights operated by THAI, Bangkok Airways and Jetstar Airways. Thai AirAsia will begin using the new airport's service on Monday. And starting Thursday, Suvarnabhumi will handle all flights to and out of Bangkok. Somchai Sawasdeepon, general-manager of the new airport, also asssured that the conveyor-belt system is now 100% functional. This followed its latest major test yesterday which covered 5,000 pieces of baggage, including 1,000 pieces belonging to the passengers of three airlines. The number of the bags tested yesterday amounted to some 80% of the baggage expected to come in at a time during the airport's rush hour. The test showed that all the items were checked in and correctly passed through the conveyor-belt system within 15 minutes, Mr Somchai said. According to Aviation Department director-general Chaisak Angkhasuwan, Suvarnabhumi airport will serve 87 airlines next month and 92 airlines in November. This still excludes chartered airlines, the number of which is expected to soar in the upcoming high tourist season. A lot of chartered flights from Scandinavia and East Europe would arrive and eventually Suvarnabhumi should serve a total of at least 100 airlines, said Mr Chaisak. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Suvarnabhumi Airport boosts traveller comfort Suvarnabhumi airport is introducing modern technology to create an impressive environment and improve traveller comfort. Suvarnabhumi, especially its passenger terminal, resulted from a collaboration of world-class structural, mechanical and electric engineers, physicists and architects. ''It's a modern building of the 21st century,'' said Airports of Thailand Plc chairman Srisook Chandrangsu, who has worked closely on the airport development from land acquisition through to design and construction. The passenger terminal showcases building innovation as it does not have a single indoor pillar. Its superstructure consists mainly of large steel pillars erected 126 metres apart and supertrusses that bear the weight of the 210m x 567m roof. The steel structure allows for a wider span between pillars as it is lighter than concrete. Electricity costs for lighting are minimised thanks to the terminal's skylight roof and transparent walls. The transparency will please visitors as they will not feel trapped but will always have views of the outside, said Mr Srisook. The glass roof and walls were also designed to function as effective insulation. The concourses where passengers pass between the terminal and their planes were designed to imitate an aircraft fuselage. Steel, glass and fabrics that form the structure of the passenger terminal and concourses were designed to tolerate expansion and contraction in changing temperatures. Air-conditioning focuses on energy-saving. Cold air is sent through floor-based air-conditioning vents. Eerie experience interrupts rite : Ghostly encounters at Suvarnabhumi Airports of Thailand (AoT) organised its largest religious rite at the new Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday to ward off evil spirits, only to experience an encounter with the unexplained. Rumours of occasional ''ghostly sightings'' have gone around since the first foundation brick was laid at the airport many years ago. The AoT is determined to correct the growing perception that the airport is possibly harbouring some ''uninvited inhabitants'' and to put its staff members' minds at ease. Yesterday's rite was presided over by 99 monks who chanted en masse to improve the luck of the new airport, set to open commercially on Thursday. However, halfway through the rite, a man appeared, quivering, and began to speak in a commanding voice claiming to be ''Poo Ming'', a guardian spirit of the land partially developed into the airport. He ordered that a proper spirit house be built at the airport to allow for its smooth operation. The man, who was unidentified, later passed out and woke up to find the spirit had left him. AoT president Chotisak Asapaviriya said the ceremony helped to boost the morale of airport staff, some of whom were unnerved after learning of frequent car crashes on the road running parallel to the airport's eastern runway. Some veiled figures have sometimes been spotted on the 6km-long road. Somchai Sawasdeepon, the airport general manager, said he had heard ghost stories from staff who came across a woman dressed in a Thai-style costume at the airport construction site in the evening. He said the airport land formerly belonged to some local communities encompassing the centuries-old Wat Nhong Prue and its cemetery. It was reported that the bodies had not been exhumed for proper religious cremation. Sqn Ldr Panupong Nualthongyai, head of Suvarnabhumi airport security, was also a witness to some strange, unexplained episodes. ''Whatever you make of it, it is the belief associated with the Thai way of life. Last week, saw these on tourist information booth at WTC. 4 bus routes from Suvarnbhumi Airport to BKK. 1 to ON NUT, 1 to Victory Monument, cannot remember the other 2. No routes mentioned, just airport to town.

Taking the slow road to Suvarnabhumi Airport : Travellers must wait at least a year before fast rail service to Suvarnabhumi will be reality Kuala Lumpur International Airport has KLIA Express. Chep Lap Kok in Hong Kong has Airport Express. But Suvarnabhumi airport will have to wait at least another year before it has direct train service. The absence of the rail link between the new airport, officially opening on Thursday in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district, to the city centre might concern air travellers who need reliable transport to carry them and their luggage to and from the terminal. Most major airports around the world rely on rail links to serve passengers because they can move many people at the same time and reduce traffic congestion around the airport. Kuala Lumpur's new airport, opened in 1998, uses KLIA Express to connect it with the city, taking 28 minutes to travel the 57km. Chep Lap Kok, opened the same year 38km from Hong Kong, uses Airport Express to reach downtown in 24 minutes. Singapore has also extended its Mass Rapid Transit line to Changi Airport, Suvarnabhumi's main rival in the region. Both KLIA and Chep Lap Kok also have check-in terminals downtown to serve passengers. Suvarnabhumi's check-in terminal is still under construction at Makkasan, the rail junction from where the Airport Link will start. ''All modern airports must use trains to carry passengers,'' said an official who did not want to be named. ''Why doesn't the country wait until the train project is completed before rushing ahead to open the new airport?'' Suvarnabhumi has an area in front of the terminal ready for the rail line, which will be above ground from Makkasan and finish at the underground airport station. The Airport Link, to be run by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), will travel the 28km from Makkasan to Suvarnabhumi in 15 minutes using the quick Airport Express. The slower Airport City Link will travel from Phaya Thai to the airport in about 30 minutes. The 12.2-billion-baht project, contracted to Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, is now due for completion in October next year. The project has faced several start-up problems. The SRT could not allow access to building sites on time and the project was further delayed when inspectors found cracks in some railway foundations earlier this year. Despite no direct train service, Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya is confident other forms of ground transport will be sufficient to handle passengers. The airport can be reached by road, he said, adding access roads will also be expanded. Suvarnabhumi will be served by five roads, the best being the eight-lane Bangkok-Chon Buri Motorway, with an airport exit that will go directly to the terminal, and the Bang Na-Chon Buri elevated tollway. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority will operate a number of routes serving the airport. ''The line will take more than 200 trips a day. It will leave every five minutes and operate with greater frequency during rush hours,'' said acting BMTA director Opas Phetmunee. The Transport Co, which oversees inter-provincial bus lines, will have 12 buses from the Eastern Bus Terminal at Ekamai and the Northern Bus Terminal at Mor Chit stopping at the airport.
