Lim Swee Say use fake figures, claim Government had cut down on foreign employment

In his election speech yesterday (September 3) at East Coast GRC, PAP candidate Lim Swee Say said that the number of foreign professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) dropped from 45,000 to 13,000 last year.

This is not true. In December 2013, the total number of PMEs is 336,000 PMEs while December 2014 registered 349,000. The PAP government did not cut down on foreign employment but have rather increased it by 13,000 last year.

The PAP candidate for East Coast GRC also warned Singaporeans that if Singapore freeze the existing manpower number, Singapore small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will close down and many Singaporeans will lose jobs. Lim Swee Say claimed that SMEs will close down because they cannot survive without foreign workers.

“We say slow down (foreign manpower growth). They say slow down not good enough — complete freeze. Why didn’t we take that path? Many SMEs employ foreign workers. With this tightening, many SMEs are already feeling the pain. Can you imagine if we freeze the foreign worker (intake) completely, how many more SMEs would have died by now? Some may say, ‘So what? We have more than 100,000 SMEs. Die, die lor’. Let me tell you why… They account for 70 per cent of our workers. Tens of thousands of Singaporeans, their jobs will also die”
Lim Swee Say is a proponent for a 6.9 million population and has been working actively promoting the influx of foreigners as a source of cheap labour for businesses.
