I think the only thing Pool fans can agree on is that Owen left for a club he thought was bigger and where his own interests would be served best.

Do we fault him for this?

Football for us is like a dream world, a place where we can escape our own daily drudgery. If we are in Owen's shoes, what would we have done? If you tell a Singaporean about corporate loyalty, many would laugh in your face and go to a company with better prospects without a second thought.

Not long ago, Stevie nearly went to Chelsea for much the same reasons. Now all is forgiven?

Unfortunately money and success often talk louder than the badge on your jersey. The one thing we can do is to win trophies and attract big players to come to Anfield - and stay - in future. The last few seasons, we have done that very well under Rafa.

sometimes when the wages r too high, the club who possesses the contract of the player in question might have to fork out part of the wages as well. as these clauses r usually kept in confidence, we will never know, right???

i have never faulted owen for wanting to leave, but to want to do a "mcmanaman" on liverpool, that i didnt really like... owen screwed liverpool, real madrid screwed owen and the sucker at the end of the line... newcastle united!!!

well, for my case, i have been moving around with the same boss for the past almost 9 years in 3 companies... so do i have a case with loyalty??? but i agree i would have moved for better $, if only i could sit down to prepare my resume...

as for stevie, the story that was presented was that he thought he was not wanted and that rafa wanted to use the $ from his transfer to build a new team, but after talks with rafa in the eleventh hour, stevie decided to stay. well, let's not accuse him of disloyalty here in the same breath as owen cos he didnt go down that road, if even though he had practically put on his shoes to start the journey liao...

for liverpool to attract world class players, it is actually quite difficult. the city is not as attractive as other cities... but the upcoming stadium will be a huge boost. rafa has to attract players by the attitude displayed on the field and with the rich tradition (richest in EPL), not to mentioned the fanatical fans whom i have never heard of booing their own players. eto'o will definitely not get monkey chants at anfield or stanley park, that's for sure. very glad and comforted that he is hinting that he wants to come cos he is a worldclass player in my humble opinion. but i would prefer miroslav klose though...

it is time, for liverpool to beat man city. YNWA...

fact or myth?
1. he refused to sign a new contract then...
2. he wanted to go real madrid.
3. rafa had no choice but to sell him for 8mil pounds.
4. after 1 season, real wanted to unload him for 17mil pounds.
5. rafa didnt want him, so owen went to newcastle and stayed injured most of the time.

well, he turned his back on pool, went to real madrid. what was he thinking? that he can supplant ronaldo (the real one!!!) or raul??? these guys sell more shirts and bring in the crowds!!! so, no matter what he does on the field, having the best minutes to goal ratio, was useless!!!

n u think he didnt feel like shit when madrid offloaded him for a profit. he screwed pool maybe for the reason that he wants to play with the biggest club in the world but they in turn screwed him big time by selling him for a profit!!! since when u heard of real madrid selling players for a profit??? owen probably feels like shit already for being used like a bloody rag doll!!! and rafa made it clear that he didnt want owen at pool. i can imagine how sad he was when he made the move to newcastle... that i felt was his just desserts.

his injuries, well, his style of play would encourage that kind of injuries... my 2 cents. cheers
Well... lets see (and this was all over LFC Boards and fansites when it went down)

1. He Forced Liverpool to sell him at a VERY cheap price. Any club would have snapped at the opportunity to sign Owen for 8million.
2. He was in the same position at Real... but he insisted that RAFA guarantee him first team. Again, if his heart was with Anfield, he could have insisted that Real negotiate with Liverpool for the same price... I think Rafa was willing to Pay about 10 million for him (we are not a rich club), but being a mercenary, Newcastle offered him better than what we could and we turned his back on the Kop....

Its ironic that after he left us in a bad position (we never found another striker to replace him), we won our 5th CL... and are in a better position than we have been in the last 10 years to challenge for the premiership.

With him in Liverpool, Rafa would have been forced to play him all the time... so i think Rafa does not mind not having Owen around.

I fault him for joining the Toons, when he could have insisted he wanted to return to Pool. Even Beckham would not rejoin the Premiership if it mean not playing for the Scums, or it meant playing against them.

It just amazes me how an innocent comment can draw strong words like "imposing" and "discriminates".

It's always interesting to read criticism about a player for "betraying" the club and then in the same post about how we should have gotten more money out of him (or he should have let us get more money out of him).

You stand up for yourself if you want. Don't hide behind screens like "counter-productive argument" or try to backtrack. You stand up for what you typed.

A deeply personal attack on Cisse has become an "innocent comment" all of a sudden - really...

At the same time, the key word in your last para on Cisse has become "may". You like to quote that post again? What's the point of saying "may" if you have no evidence?

I suggest if your remarks are so difficult to read, kindly explain or elaborate in detail for my benefit, or else I may misrepresent you again.

I do criticise Rafa for this one. He has said, honestly, before that he is still learning. He will need to learn how to change things in the middle of a game and unlock defences in away games where the home team put ten men behind the ball. Has happened too often for my liking now (Boro for instance).

We are going to have to change our style of play to suit our status as Premiership Challengers. This means more often than not, most teams will just want to frustrate us and a draw will be a good result for them. We still lack the players to unlock those stubborn defences.

I quite like him,a passionate player with a bit of character. As he told the media in an interview,Gerrad used to 'steal' his colourful underwear from his locker & tried them on !
sorry for not replying earlier cos i somehow missed yr reply to my post. well, for cisse, marseille or any team for that matter, would try to get loaned out players cheap cos it would mean that the players in question r surplus to requirements. of course, not those young ones who r loaned out to get more playing time and hence experience.

i agree lyon would do well with cisse rather than another former liverpool striker. at least cisse will look up when he dribbles or try to pass... kekeke... but that means that liverpool "might" meet him in the champs league next season. better safe than sorry...

i suspect that he is a "key player" kind too, just like i suspect kewell to be one as well. cisse did really well at auxerre but then again, he suffered a horrific broken leg injury in his 1st season with pool. i must comment him for his determination though. regardless whether he does rugby conversions more often than not, he is one who wears his heart on his sleeve and i like that in a liverpool player. liverpool was strong in the 80s bcos many of the players then played with so much pride and determination. that, i feel, is the difference between good and great.

well, u've said it. he left and liverpool won the champs league. that proves to a certain extent that liverpool r better off without him. if a player wants to leave, usually they should leave cos the heart is not there anymore. i can bet u my last dollar that owen was hoping for liverpool not to win the champs league that fateful nite!!! well, i guess he spent the rest of the evening squeezing his balls blue...

bro rahl and bro canthaveenuf, borrowing bro klkool's words, cool down. i m sorry if i played any part in the argument by replying and thus keeping this discussion about cisse alive. but i sincerely believe, in my most humble opinion, we have the most knowledgeable and most loyal football fans here in sbf, if not sg. other fans r definitely envious of this thread cos theirs will never be as thought provoking as this one. let's show them that, eh?

the siege mentality... haiz... that was the archilles' heel when rafa was with valencia as well. guess that is the problem when u get players who approach the game so methodically, just like rafa. i couldnt see anyone trying to do anything to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. such dropped points, if it still continues to occur, will cost liverpool the premiership title until this is solved.

that's why instead of buying a few players of international quality, liverpool is more in need of a couple of "out of this world" players to make the difference. someone to provide that moment of magic to break the balance of the game. but i somehow feel that liverpool also needs a few of those players who can grind out a result when the going gets tough... yes, i m torn, and it hurts to see them play so badly against a poor man city side. if this team can only muster 3 shots on target against a poor team, then they really dont deserve to be challenging for honours.
