Re: Liverpool Fc @ Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

Now on to the final step. Isn't it wonderful how Chelski shot themselves . First adopting a more unadveturous formation at Anfield.

Even when they started to get the upper hand, we always had enough in reserve to ensure that we were never truly stretched.

Thank you Reina... again, the keeper is the hero of the day.

I think Rafa was always expecting to go to penalties... He knew we could not afford to attack with reckless abandon and concede a goal to Chelsea.

Well done to the entire team. ONE MORE MATCH. I would prefer it to be Milan . To prove Istanbul was not luck ...

I thought Liverpool should have wrapped up the game in the 1st 45mins when they were having such superior possessions of 70%

Penalties (whether you're trying to take them or save them) is all about confidence ... only a "special" coach would think that a player who could strike a ball well in training would be confident enough to strike well on the night too - the very same player he thinks is not good enough to his first 15 (not to mention first 11) most of the last 2-3 seasons.

Possession doesn't mean much these days ... you should have seen more than enough games where the Reds dominate only to end up drawing or losing. Chelski was trying to do what we usually do best (as underdogs), absorb all pressures defensively before breaking out quickly offensively.
In the end, it was only sweet poetic justice to see Kuyt get his moment of fame ... after unfairly being denied by both the crossbar & a stupid linesman during regulation & extended play respectively.

Interestingly, after watching the match the 2nd time around ... I now wanna cast my MoM vote to Carra. IMHO, it was he who stepped in ahead of Drogba in the 2nd half or else, it would have been a simple tap-in that would have changed the whole complexion of the game .... yes, the same moment when Drogba went berserk when the linesman flagged for goalkick when he was actually a good hal step later than Carra.

Well, the scums are now given the chance to prove that Istanbul was no fluke ... Kaka & Seedorf have ensured the 2nd half in the San Siro will start with a 2-0 scoreline. Let's see if Manure is a real team & overcome this ...

Oh yes, of course the uphill task is made all the more mountainous when your supposedly best player choose to do a backheel in the very first minute of the game to taunt the aged Milan team into playing their best.
Some call it youthful indulgence ... I call it idiotic indiscipline.

Re: Liverpool Fc @ Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

TOMKINS: ALL IN A NIGHT'S WORK
Paul Tomkins 02 May 2007

Yesterday morning I wrote down a few thoughts, to summon in the event of the Reds losing, drawing or going out on the away goal rule; the kind of stuff to ponder about this club of ours: pride, history, and a bright future.

Because even defeat wouldn't obscure the good things in place at Liverpool right now.

Those things still apply very much today, but they're less crucial to dwell on at this point in time. It's easy to get carried away in a defeat, and feel utter dejection, and that was my first concern before the match, but the mood of this club effectively rested on a few spot-kicks. How narrow the margins between joy and pain. But how deserved the manic celebrations were. Only Jose Mourinho felt Chelsea were the better team on the night.

And yet it's also easy to get carried away in victory, and nothing has yet been won. But a second European Cup final in three years is the kind of feat only special clubs can boast, and an achievement in itself. When Mourinho said he'd lose his job at Chelsea if he had Benítez's record he had clearly spoken too soon; we can only be thankful the Reds don't have Chelsea's record in Europe.

No one wants to think about anything other than success in Athens, but it's taken a mighty effort just to get there, and that deserves recognition. I've always felt this club is moving in the right direction with Benítez, even during those inevitable setbacks, and whatever happens in Greece he's given Liverpool back it's full European pride.

I still can't quite believe Chelsea didn't offer more of a threat, with Petr Cech by far the busier of the two keepers. Before the game I harboured a suspicion that the Reds would win by a single goal, but that it could easily be 2-1, and thereby result in elimination. I just had visions of a late – and unjust – killer blow, and was left surprised at how little Chelsea created as the game grew stretched.

Penalties aside, my heart didn't spend a lot of time in my mouth. (Metaphorically, of course.) And even the penalties were less stressful than normal, thanks to Pepe Reina's instant save.

To keep Chelsea out for 120 minutes, when they so rarely fail to score in 90, is a massive, massive (would a third 'massive' be overstating things?) achievement, not least because of the potential for nerves when fearing the double-counting away goal – especially when it gets to the stage where there's not time for the two-goal reply it would then require.

Much of that is down to the peerless Jamie Carragher and his willing apprentice, Daniel Agger, as Ashley Cole – who used to be a great attacking full-back – lumped long diagonal balls from deep into the box time and again.

Good tactical planning meant Benítez opted for Riise at left-back, with the Norwegian a very good defensive header, who could tuck in against Drogba when Cole's deliveries where thrown in.

And it was nice that the game itself was won by a training ground routine that totally bamboozled Chelsea, mixing Benítez's canny planning with inch-perfect execution in both Gerrard's pass and Agger's strike. It was especially pleasing, from my point of view, that it was a battle of wits that our manager won against theirs.

Chelsea had become so obsessed with Peter Crouch, even though he's only two inches taller than their own target man, that they took their eye off any alternative to Gerrard looking for him. Kuyt reprised the Emile Heskey role as seen at Old Trafford in 2000 (when Heskey eased an opponent out of the way for Danny Murphy to score) and a training ground routine was transferred, in perfection, to the big stage.

It amazed me that Agger wasn't on the PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist, and also that he generally receives few mentions in the media. He has been sensational this season, and yet one slightly iffy game last week and suddenly he was a name on everyone's lips. Which was odd, given you need to be some centre-back to dislodge Sami Hyypia.

Agger responded with a brilliant defensive display against Drogba, and scored a superb free-kick. It's not easy hitting a ball that's coming towards you in that manner – it's easier to let it run across your body – but he struck it brilliantly. It swerved wide of the post before nestling inside. The look on his face after it hit the back of the net (in other words, it did cross the line) was one of the season's highlights.

His four goals from centre-back has been a major bonus this season, especially with some valuable goalscoring midfielders on the sidelines, and Sami Hyypia (who has found the time for three goals himself) featuring less. The centre-backs now share eight for the season between them, and I'm not sure the last time that happened.

I'd also like to praise a few more of the lesser-sung heroes. Jermaine Pennant, whose growth into a real Liverpool winger continues apace, was excellent until he had to go off injured. He has a great way of drifting inside defenders, then going back outside if nothing presents itself; at first it seems like a mistake, a wander into a blind alley, but he then wriggles to the byline and delivers real quality, as seen with Crouch's header that Cech somehow saved.

And Bolo Zenden, who's not had the best of times since joining, with a series of injuries disrupting his flow and stifling his confidence, showed a lot of grit, energy and tactical awareness on the left. With Pennant and Gerrard the two midfielders most likely to push on, and Mascherano the one to hold back, that meant Bolo had to do a bit of both. It was his responsibility to judge when to go forward and when to help protect – or indeed cover for – Riise. I felt he did it especially well, and managed to test Cech with an excellent right-foot strike, as well as score a brilliant opening penalty.

Then there's the man who was somehow deemed unworthy of a relegation dogfight and now sees himself an integral part of a team that's steamrollered its way to the Champions League final.

Mascherano is not a silky Argentine of the Messi and Maradona mould, but he has some special qualities of his own. It's weird, he passes beautifully, but is beastly and bullish in harassing opponents and winning the ball. In that sense he's like Graeme Souness, although I'm not aiming to start direct comparisons between the two at this early stage. (Although Mascherano would benefit from growing an intimidating bushy 'tash.)

But Souness would certainly have been proud of that display last night.
Up front Dirk Kuyt was sensational. Even before his eye-catching attempts at goal he was amazing me with his workrate; I didn't think he could cover any more ground than previously seen, but I think he upped it again. He'd seemed to lose his way a bit as the season wore on, looking a little jaded, but is looking back to his best once again.

He's so close to being a really top-class goalscorer. You could say it's a matter of inches; I think he's hit the woodwork four or five times this season, including twice against Chelsea, mostly with excellent efforts, and last night had a goal wrongly chalked offside that could have sealed the game for the Reds in extra-time. He has 13 goals this season, despite often playing deeper than an out-and-out striker, and with a bit more luck would be up with Crouch approaching 20 for the season.

As it was, Kuyt's disallowed goal meant penalties. Reina's 'revenge' against Robben was particularly sweet. The outlandish theatrics of the Dutchman last season was not forgotten at Anfield, and it was a great decision – from our point of view – that he was chosen to step up first.
I've been watching a lot of My Name Is Earl lately, and Earl would have nodded in appreciation of this football karma. How could Robben honestly expect to score?

The penalties were watched by Zen Buddhist Benítez, in a quasi-lotus position as the shoot-out took place. I think it actually sent a really good sign to his players; I've never seen him look so relaxed.

I was actually not that much more nervous than when watching the shoot-out in the Youth Cup final last week. I really felt for the young lads taking their own high-pressure penalties, live on TV, at the start of their careers.

That whole karma thing came back that day, too. The scorer of United's game-winning penalty at Anfield in the first leg had – for my liking at least – shown too much arrogance in front of the Kop after he scored. It's always important to remember the pitfalls of celebrating too early, and inviting a riposte. So it was fitting that he missed the decisive penalty in the shoot-out.

But when I mentioned the Youth Cup final in my piece earlier this week, citing their heroics as an inspiration to the first team, I didn't expect to see such a carbon copy of events: the Reds overturning a first-leg deficit with a 1-0 win to ensure penalties, tension, and delirium.

And so Greece beckons in three weeks' time. For those Reds who still haven't ceased their celebrations in Istanbul it's just a short trip across to an adjacent country. As for the cup only being on loan, here's hoping that it's swiftly brought back home.

This is the very stuff the witty & knowledgeable Kop is fed on ... not some "supposedly authorititative" motherhood statements made by a certain Tohari Paijan in full-page TNP coverages - yes, the same man who's qualified but remains unemployed by any teams in the S-League.
Hope you guys enjoy reading it as much as I did ... my smile just became broader & broader, each time I complete reading one more stanza. Yup, this is as good as reading poetry.

Post-Match Reactions ... from those very close to the field

"Maybe it was better than when we beat Chelsea in 2005 and I am really, really proud of my players. Chelsea are a very good side with some good players and at times it was difficult to control them. They had a lot of free-kicks but we defended really well and worked so hard all through the game. Our supporters were fantastic and the atmosphere was amazing and we are going to enjoy this victory. Pepe Reina was fantastic in the penalty shoot-out and he is an expert when it comes to that. The players knew how to beat Chelsea - by playing with passion. When you can hear the supporters behind you, it helped the players play with determination, passion and heart and they were also trying to do a good job with game intelligence. The game was massive and everything was perfect. You can see the difference when you play in another stadium and then you play here."
Rafael Benitez

"They scored four and we scored one, that is the story of the penalties and shoot-outs are part of the game. And that's what people will remember. They will remember the final was Liverpool v Manchester United or AC Milan. In five, 10, 20 years nobody remembers who was in the semi-final. Nobody remembers that because the history of football is all about who makes the final."
Jose Mourinho

"All the lads deserve so much credit for the achievement last night. For me, it felt even better than the victory in the semi-final in 2005. I remember on that night it was all about digging in and defending for our lives. We did that this time when we had to, but you could see there was more quality to our play throughout the team, from the goalkeeper, through to the defence, midfield and strikers. We deserved to win over 90 minutes, created more chances, and over the whole game, we've never really been hurt by them. We've shown how much we've improved in the last two years - we're far more dangerous now. Going through on penalties is always nerve-wracking, but we knew in Pepe there's no-one better in the world in that situation and he's delivered the goods for us again. As for the fans, what more can we say? They're the best in the world and proved it again. It was louder 45 minutes before kick-off last night than it is in any other stadium during the match. They're unbelievable. I think Mourinho was a bit disrespectful calling us a little club. Two finals in three years - not bad for a little club."
Steven Gerrard

"Liverpool is a top European club and I came here to win trophies. This is one of the biggest and I'm very pleased to have this happen in my first year here. Now we just have to win it. The noise for the penalties from the crowd was unbelievable. Pepe Reina did his the job for us but so did the crowd. You always have to be a bit lucky but we deserved to win. We played a really good game and the only thing Chelsea did was play long balls. We always controlled the game even if one or two times they were dangerous with Drogba. I wasn't nervous before my penalty. Actually I had no nerves at all. They had missed two penalties so I just had to take my responsibility. I just chose a corner."
Dirk Kuyt

"It's a great achievement to beat a team like Chelsea over two legs. We thought there weren't going to be a lot of chances in the game and that's the way it turned out. Fortunately for us Daniel scored a great goal and then when it went to penalties we knew we had one of the best goalkeepers in the world and so we always had a chance. Of course we had the fans on our side and they again rose to the occasion. They were brilliant from start to finish and once again proved what a difference they can make. To reach the final again is brilliant and we're going to enjoy the fact that we're there again. That's the third year running we've beaten Chelsea in a semi-final. It doesn't matter who we play. We can relax now and all watch the game on Wednesday night."
Jamie Carragher

Post-Match Reactions ... from those not so close to the field

"Now that's what people call history. Another memorable Anfield night, another semi-final win over Chelsea, and another Champions League final for Liverpool. Like in 2005, the Stamford Bridge outfit felt the power of the famous old stadium as Rafael Benitez continued to cast his spell over Jose Mourinho in Europe. The Portuguese had belittled Liverpool during the build-up to the tie. Fired up by those comments, the Liverpool players - backed by a raucous Anfield crowd - made Mourinho regret his outburst with a courageous performance to secure a seventh European Cup final appearance. But while the magnificent support from the stands played its part, this was a victory earned on the pitch. For Liverpool's American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, this was the kind of evening for which they'd paid their millions. Both were in attendance, Gillett even coming down to the front of the directors' box before kick-off to shake hands with fans, sign autographs and have pictures taken. He ended the evening by being drenched with champagne after joining Liverpool's jubilant players in the dressing room. Gillett, like Hicks, has been well and truly bitten by the Anfield bug. The Liverpool manager had raised eyebrows by naming Bolo Zenden in midfield at the expense of Alonso who, having missed the corresponding fixture in 2005 through suspension, began on the bench. Zenden isn't exactly a crowd favourite, but he will have won a whole army of new admirers after a fine display against his former team."
Ian Doyle, Daily Post

"What a football club this is. Just when you think there's nowhere to go beyond cloud nine, they summon you to an even higher plane of ecstasy. To overshadow the achievements of 2005 was a request to surpass the seemingly unsurpassable, but over 130 minutes of buttock-clenching drama Liverpool somehow eclipsed their semi-final victory over Chelsea two years ago. In so many ways this was better. There are times when the players stand aside, applaud and thank the Kop for inspiring them to epic European wins. This was different. It was a night when the Kop rightfully stood in awe and appreciation of the efforts of their players, who kept their dreams afloat with the kind of verve and tenacity which the fans injected into every chorus of their songs. The power of Anfield, almost exclusively argued as the responsibility of the Kop in the build-up to the game, manifested itself thanks to the performances on the pitch. Yes, the atmosphere was every bit as good, if not better, than two years ago. But if we look back fondly to European Cup number five and remind ourselves it was the intervention of the crowd which made the difference at key moments, number six may be earned more by the overall quality of those wearing the red shirts. In the directors' box, Montse Benitez shed a tear. Nearby, the Gillett and Hicks family recognised they hadn't just bought a football club, but a sporting phenomenon."
Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

"No ghost goals to bemoan this time, nothing whatsoever to complain about. Just another night to leave Jose Mourinho haunted by Rafa Benitez' semi-final curse over him and Chelsea wondering if they will ever take the ultimate step to Champions League glory. Maybe it needed the heartbreak of penalties to separate two sides who had slugged each other to a standstill over three-and-a-half hours as Anfield watched on rapt with shredded nerves and sheer desire. Driven on by Steven Gerrard, and aided and abetted by Javier Mascherano, Liverpool called all the shots."
Martin Lipton, The Mirror

"Be careful what you wish for: Jose Mourinho had been moaning about never receiving penalties and his Chelsea team were put painfully on the spot at a crowing Anfield last night. Arjen Robben and Geremi both missed in the shoot-out, denied by the brilliance of Pepe Reina, and Liverpool were off, laughing and dancing, singing and shouting, to Athens for the May 23 final of the European Cup. "In ancient Greece, we'll win it six times," chorused the Kop, before reminding Mourinho that talk is cheap, European trophies are real riches. "Some Teams Make Headlines - Others Make History," read one banner. And the real special ones make really special saves. Reina seems to come most to life when the ball goes dead. In years to come, Liverpool school art-classes will feature tableaux of the remarkable shoot-out, fabled images of Reina flinging himself this way and that, echoing past European feats of Bruce Grobbelaar and Jerzy Dudek. Liverpool, celebrating their 10th successful shoot-out out of 11 in their history, deserved victory. Carragher was immense. Steven Gerrard worked tirelessly in midfield, his example inspiring Zenden and Javier Mascherano to displays of sustained excellence."
Henry Winter, The Telegraph

Champions League Final 2007

Date: 24 May 07
Day: Thu
Time: 2am - 5am

That's when the final will be played (local time) ... can I have a show of hands if there are actually more than just a handful of us who would wanna meet up & share this (potential) historic moment togather??

We can settle on the venue later ... likely to be some pub, since it's gonna be the wee hours of a weekday.
Alternatively, if there's a suitable place to accommodate all plus some sponsorship forthcoming, we could be looking at bringing in some striptease for half-time entertainments too??

Re: Liverpool Fc @ Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

Again,we will be in our famous Red,Milan in white.
What a great week,we are heading to Athens to meet our classic european rivals Milan for the second time in 3 years. The scums may have ruled the EPL,but still a long way to go before they can match us in Europe.

Well at least Chelski fans do have their turn to laugh at them now

As in cooking pot calling the kettle black??
The Blues will always be known as "made it to the SFs 3 times in 4 years ... but never reached any finals".
