Vietnam plans to slash maternity benefits for female workers

If female workers are entitled to these benefits, employers are less likely to consider hiring them, according to the labor ministry.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs is preparing an amendment to the Labor Law that will cut the maternity benefits female workers are currently entitled to.

Under the existing law, female workers are entitled to six months maternity leave. In addition, those with babies of under 12 months old are given an hour off during the day, whilst those who are on their menstrual cycles are provided a 30 minute break.

If the proposed amendment is passed by lawmakers, these breaks will too be scrapped.

Ha Dinh Bon, director of the ministry’s Department of Legal Affairs, said many companies have asked for these breaks to be eliminated to avoid negative impacts on their businesses.

Bon said that female workers in Vietnam have a longer maternity leave than many other countries in the region, which adds up to six months.

In Malaysia, most companies give their female employees 60-day paid maternity leave, while the figure in Indonesia is no more than 90 days, according to media reports from the respective countries.

If female workers are given these benefits, employers are less likely to consider hiring women, Bon added.

Under the current law, employers are not allowed to ask female workers to work nights, overtime or go on long-distance business trips if they are more than 7 months pregnant or have babies under 12 months old.

Employers are not permitted to sack or unilaterally end contracts with female employees when they get married, pregnant or have babies under 12 months old according to the current law.

The draft amendment will be submitted to the National Assembly, Vietnam's legislature, in April for consideration.

Car owners flood registration offices in Ho Chi Minh City

Many car registration offices in Ho Chi Minh City are being overwhelmed by a large number of applicants who have decided to empty their pockets on new automobiles before the Lunar New Year.

Hundreds of cars lined up for several hours in front of such bureaus for registration.

Some offices have reported a three-fold hike in the number of applicants compared to an average day, whereas others have to temporarily cease accepting new forms.

According to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters’ observation at a registration office on Hong Ha Street, Tan Binh District, a large number of automobiles had already gathered at the location by 7:30 am on Friday.

As there was no space left on its premises, the registration bureau had to stop receiving further cars.

According to Nguyen Dinh Quan, director of the office, the place has been filled with applicants since Tuesday.

“We have to halt the reception of application forms to prevent newcomers from parking their vehicles outside of the facility while waiting for their turn, which compromises traffic safety and is against traffic regulations,” Quoc stated.

Many residents decided to purchase new cars for use for their festive activities during the Lunar New Year, leading to this crowding, the director explained.

The Lunar New Year, or Tet, falls on January 28, with preparations and celebrations taking place one week before and after the date.

Other registration offices in District 11 and Thu Duc District faced similar problems as the number of vehicles coming to these facilities was many times higher than normal days.

According to some car owners, they arrived at as early as 6:00 am and were still unable to complete the registration procedures hours later.

Everybody likes to use this popular hokkien sayings but do they really see any sense or logic in it???

Eating the wrong food if minor case may only have diarrhea or food poisoning, if serious case may even result in death e.g. severe allergic reaction...ETC

Saying or posting the wrong words, minor case only maybe kena cursed, if serious maybe kena poolic complaint or sued for defamation

So simply saying the reverse should be truer

Canned ones I no no, actually now that you've mentioned it I seldom see them around in Wetnam.....

Dried ones got few types, the cheapest I ever found is those small little pale ones they call Oc Bao Ngu about 600k to 900k per kg, those big brown top grade ones cost easily from 18m to 20m per kg
