Agree things were much cheaper then but also the rupiah was 1800 to the dollar. It evens out if you look at it carefully.

As for cab fare, I always cross over to the mall situated opposite the Batam Centre ferry terminal. The guy sitting at the entrance of the mall (with a walkie-talkie) will quote you an opening price of RP50,000. Tell him this is not your first time taking a cab to 89 and you've never paid more than RP35,000. I've never paid more than RP35,000

Anyways, I usually take the cab to Penuin Top 100. There I'll buy my beer, raincoats, and tidbits. 89 is situated across the road from Top 100.

Yup! I still remember those days though Rup plunged, but the hotel rates did not flow in tandem. I mean I was quoted like S$30 something for a nite stay at Harmony hotel.

Those days my favourite hotels were Harmony and Melia. Cheap cheap for 4 star hotels. But mths later they adjusted accordingly peg to Rup rate.

RP35K for taxi at counter. Will take note on tat.
