What happen to Jakarta’s dancing monkeys(topeng monyet)after the practice was banned?
The cruel entertainment known as topeng monyet (literally masked monkey, in reference to the disturbing doll head masks they are often forced to wear) was not so long ago a common sight in Jakarta. Wearing chains around their necks and taught to do silly tricks, they often entertained small children who laughed at their antics. But behind the masks, the monkeys suffered terrible abuse at the hands of their owners, who used incredibly inhumane training methods to teach them their tricks. Fortunately, thanks in large part to a five-year campaign spearheaded by the Jakarta Animal Aid Foundation (JAAN), then Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo banned the practice in the capital back in 2013. The government rescued dozens of these monkeys and they’re now being rehabilitated so that they could eventually be returned to the wild. Thanks to JAAN ‘s efforts, 62 of the monkey were released back into the wild in 2015. Unfortunately, topeng monyet have only been banned in Jakarta and the practice continues in other parts of the country, including Bandung. If you would like to support JAAN in their efforts to achieve a nationwide ban as well as rehabilitate former topeng monyet, you could consider donating to them through their “sponsor an ex-dancing monkey” program to help see these poor creatures returned to their rightful home. http://www.jakartaanimalaid.com/spon...ancing-monkey/ |

President Jokowi asks for a CNY discount on a Rp 100k shirt but gets denied
One of the reasons that President Joko Widodo won the country’s top office is that he has sold himself as a true man of the people. a real regular ol’ Indonesian. As the mayor of Solo and later the governor of Jakarta, he was famous for his impromptu “blusukan” trips to talk with people on the streets, which is obviously not something he has been able to keep up as president of the country. But he still likes to use his social media accounts to document how real he is still keeping things. Thus this post on Facebook from yesterday: https://www.facebook.com/Jokowi/phot...085636/?type=3 Quote:
We’re just kidding, of course. We would never question the veracity of the president’s account, PR-friendly though it may be. After all, he has proven his common man credentials over and over again, like that time he flew economy to Singapore. Or the time he went looking for bargain electronics in Mangga Dua. Or that time he ordered kaki lima food for a cabinet meeting. The real question is, will Jokowi’s new shirt cause another fashion trend like with his famous bomber jacket? Er… maybe not. |

Indonesian Woman Implicated in Kim Jong-nam's Murder
Indonesian Woman Implicated in Kim Jong-nam's Murder
Jakarta. Siti Aishah, the Indonesian woman who was arrested in Malaysia for her alleged involvement in the murder of the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, claims that she was an unwitting accomplice. Local police arrested Siti along with a Vietnamese woman and a Malaysian man two days after Kim Jong-nam was assassinated with what is believed to have been a fast-acting poison. Siti says she was tricked into believing that she was merely playing a prank on Kim Jong-nam, in return for money, and that she was unaware of her actual role until her arrest. House of Representatives Commission I, which oversees foreign affairs, will summon State Intelligence Agency (BIN) officials to provide further information on the investigation. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry will also assist Siti in the investigation and coordinate with the Malaysian Police. A North Korean national was also arrested in connection with the case in Selangor, Malaysia, on Friday evening (17/02). However, police have not revealed any details related to the arrest. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed on Thursday that Kim Jong-nam was assassinated. The South Korean government has meanwhile accused North Korea of being responsible for the murder, claiming that Kim Jong-nam, who was protected by the Chinese government, was a known target. However, there has so far been no concrete evidence connecting the North Korean leader with the murder of his half-brother. Pyongyang has also declined to comment. A source in Beijing with ties to both the North Korean and Chinese governments told Reuters that North Korea was not involved in the killing and had no motive. Kim Jong-nam went into exile after Kim Jong-un became the supreme leader of North Korea. http://jakartaglobe.id/news/indonesi...he-was-framed/ |

Four richest Indonesians wealthier than poorest 100 million: Oxfam
The four richest Indonesians are wealthier than the poorest 100 million people in the country, a study has found, highlighting how huge numbers have been left behind as the economy booms. Oxfam said that President Joko Widodo had failed to fulfil pledges to fight inequality and called on the government to urgently increase spending on public services and make corporations and the wealthy pay more tax. Indonesia has enjoyed an economic boom that has reduced the number of people living in extreme poverty but the gap between rich and poor has risen faster than in any other Southeast Asian country in the past 20 years, the Oxfam study said. “The benefits of growth have not been shared equally, and millions have been left behind,” said the research, which was released earlier this week. “The widening of the gap between the rich and the rest is a serious threat to Indonesia’s future prosperity. If inequality is not tackled, then reducing poverty will be much more difficult, and social instability could increase.” In 2016, the collective wealth of the four richest Indonesians, all men, was $25 billion, Oxfam said. This was more than the total wealth of the 100 million poorest, out of a population of 255 million, it said. According to Forbes rich list, the wealthiest included three tobacco tycoons — brothers Michael and Budi Hartono, and Susilo Wonowidjojo. The study said inequality has been rising since the 1997 Asian financial crisis, which led to the introduction of more free market policies. This shift allowed those at the top to capture the greatest share of the benefits of years of strong growth, it said. The study pointed to rising inequality within cities, and between urban and rural areas. Oxfam said Indonesia’s taxation system had failed to play a role in redistributing wealth as it was not collecting nearly as much revenue as it should, while an underfunded education system was stopping many from getting better jobs. In January the government launched a major programme to tackle inequality that included measures aimed at helping poor farmers and fishermen, improving the tax system and providing more opportunities for vocational training. |

Brave Jakarta sanitation workers dive into pools of shit to unclog drains
Brave Jakarta sanitation workers dive into pools of shit to unclog drains jammed with trash
It should go without saying that, no matter what preventative measures the government builds to keep Jakarta from flooding, it will all be for nothing if the citizens don’t play their part in keeping the city clean, particularly its drains. Yesterday, we saw the most widespread flooding in the capital for about two years, which many would say was caused by a prolonged period of heavy rainfall. But we can’t help thinking that much of the flooding in Jakarta could be avoided if we had all learnt our lesson from previous floods. Specifically, that litter can quickly clog up drains, which are obviously essential to getting water off the streets and preventing flooding. But it seems many Jakartans remain ignorant of that basic fact, or simply do not care, as a couple of viral videos have emerged showing just how badly clogged some of our drains are. So bad, in fact, that some of brave souls in our city’s sanitation department have to dive into pools of shit (quite literally) to unclog drains from litter. As horrifying as it is that somebody has to do such an unimaginably unpleasant job (which we respect them immensely for doing) it’s at least reassuring to see that both videos have gone viral on social media, with the first one in particular having been viewed over one million times and shared over 25 thousand times in less than 24 hours. Perhaps some people care about keeping Jakarta clean after all. But sharing that video isn’t going to help unless it convinces people to stop littering, and convinces them to try and convince others to stop littering as well. Otherwise these low-income sanitation workers (who, in both videos, aren’t even equipped with basic protective equipment such as goggles when they dived into the black, murky water) will have to keep doing our dirty work for us. |
