There a number of motels or budget hotels along R.formosa rd(portuguese language) where transit hourly rates and daily rates but not much amenities in this kind of budget hotel, mainly use for bonking activities.

It's a common hidden sight with tricksters and conman especially in zhuhai border and even small number of casino tricksters in macau who posed to tourists to change currencies but in return exchanging fake currencies.
If you are easily cheated in overseas, this proves one is not streetsmart enough or very ignorant of the ugly sides of the world or doesn't really travel much .
Most tricksters are prc mainlanders who dosen't even know how to speak cantonese and yet want to operate its activities in a canton Land.
Actually , i do feel that most singaporeans are very "kiasi"(hokkien)-type of personality.The new generation of singaporeans are the ones , born in the early 80s and late 80s .
You said your friend got beaten up and no reason why those travelling with him didn't fight back and create a scene to avoid the situation.
If your friend is in trouble alone, then he can think of a way to get him out of the situation , just look for any poles or hard objects , and just whack if opponents threaten him.
Make sure one travel in groups will feel secure and travel alone only if you are experienced in certain facts and good understanding of the security issues and would be better if you are a martial art trained person in any forms.

A similar incident happened to me during early 2009 when i holiday alone at Zhuhai.

Was suppose to cross the zhuhai custom to macau to catch my flight back to sg. But the q was long. Was thinking of other alternatives, when suddenly a guy approached me and told me that he is a taxi driver from macau, and can fetch me in his car to cross the border. Thinking that i might missed my flight, decided to follow him.
But instead of going to his car, he hailed a taxi. I sensed somethings wrong, but he assured me that his car is just a short distance away from the custom and have to take the cab to his car. We alighted at some back alley and he told me to wait while he goes and call his wife whom is driving the car. At the back alley, i met another man whom told me he is a doctor from Guangzhou and going to sg to attend a seminar @ SGH. He tried to start an conversation with me and asking qns. Also telling me that he is taking the same flight as me and is waiting for his chaffeur to come and pick him up to go to macau airport. Then the man that approached me come running back and said his car had an accident and unable to fetch me across to the macau airport. The doctor was just beside me all these while and mention that he can get his chaffeur to give me a free ride.
Immediately i sense that it a trick and quickily rejected his offer, and quickily pull my lugguage and run towards the main road. Wasted almost an hour before return back to the zhuhai custom. Had a hard time to persuade the custom officer to let me go through the Diplomat's q as i need to catch my flight.
Really a close shave for me..
To cut story short. On the flight back to sg, was trying to locate the so-call doctor from Guangzhou, but there is no sight of him.

My first Macau FR:

After reading various reports by senior bros,I decided to try the sauna scene which is touted as more newbie friendly. And I wasn't disappointed .

Arrived at Sanado at about 4:30pm , there is a 20% discount for bros who enter before 5pm for all services before 8:30pm. I am asked to store my belongings in a locker and go a shower. A young chinese girl showered me and gave me a welcome bbbj. After the shower, I proceeded to the sauna main lounge where the manager explained the menu to me. Food and drinks(excluding alcohol) is free flow and if I do not call any room services the charge will be 308MOP. Room services varies with the minimum of 498 for a shanghainess/thai massage to 1200 for full service and 1900 for extended services and others like double fly etc. I was then told that a game is starting soon.

The lights soon dimmed and a couple dozens of girls start walking in , wearing nun costumes with no bra or panties. they did a catwalk and eventually all the girls are assigned to a guy in a lounge when the games starts. They do 6 activities for about 60s in a round robin with the girls rotating between guys for each activity with a change in music indicating a switch. First activity is nipple licking, followed by breast fondling, crotch grinding,body rubbing, earlicking and crotch fondling.

After the fun , all the girls are lined up for bros to take their pick to bring to room. I ordered girl 7677(perm number). The Doc would than disappear into the direction pointed by the 3rd guy & would return back with a bunch of it which was not shown to me. The Doc claim he has used up all his money & ask me whether I have money with me & he would give me a handsome profit once we go across the border to his clinic. I smell the rat once this doc was telling this creature cannot be found easily & I told him all I have was a few miserable RMB & I was in a rush of time.
The cost to cross the border in a private car would be at least RMB300 which I found out from a taxi driver in Macau so Bros using the border please be alert of conman.

let me guess, the doc has rotten teeth and claimed to be an eminent doc in eastern medicine and he showed you some dried seahorse ? Amazing. he's still conning. I stunned him with my taser 2 years ago , he was literally writhing in pain on the ground.
