Chinese woman demands refund from matchmaking agency for failing to find ‘quality man with 100 million yuan fortune’

The company says unnamed divorcee in her mid-30s, who paid 700,000 yuan for dates with 43 different suitors, was ‘just picky’

A Chinese woman looking for love paid more than 700,000 yuan (HK$840,000) to a matchmaking company to arrange dates with more than 40 rich suitors – but has asked for her money back after none lived up to her expectations, mainland media reports.

The unnamed divorced woman in her mid-30s, from Hangzhou, in Zhejiang province, had stressed she wanted to meet only men no older than 40, who had never been married before – and had assets of at least 100 million yuan, Qianjiang Evening News reported on Friday.

The matchmaking company assured the woman, who said she owned a cross-border e-commerce company, that they would be able to find her someone to satisfy all of her requirements as long as she paid the appropriate service fees.

She had paid numerous fees totalling more than 700,000 yuan to the matchmaking company since 2014, with the largest single payment of more than 600,000 yuan, the report said.

However, the woman said that the “quality” of the candidates had fallen well below her expectations.

She claimed she felt cheated and had hired professional debt collectors to get her money back, the report said.

The matchmaking company said it had reported the matter to the police because it claimed the debt collectors had threatened the personal safety of its staff.

It added that it had arranged for her to go on dates with 43 candidates, but she was “just picky”.
