Internal rifts within PAP ranks surface ahead of General Election

admin / 3 hours ago July 24, 2015

“Very disappointing”, this is what Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew lamented on his Secretary General, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s decision today to dissolve his Moulmein-Kallang GRC. Singaporeans are however not surprised given the number of public transport breakdowns hit record high under Lui Tuck Yew’s watch while discontentment against public transport rages on.

After all, there is no better way to express PM Lee Hsien Loong’s frustration with Lui Tuck Yew’s failure than to entirely remove his 4-man constituency.
“For me of course there’s a sense of disappointment. I’ve been with the residents for so many years already and have come to be really fond of them”
On the very same day, PAP MP for Ang Mo Kio, Inderjit Singh announced his resignation from the PAP without giving any explanation – a suspicious move very unusual for the ruling PAP which is known for its much-trumpeted “succession planning”. PAP MP Inderjit Singh even chose to use Facebook as his preferred resignation announcement, a far cry from the official PAP stance of using its controlled-media machinery, the Singapore Press Holdings.

What is more worrying is that the minority Indian candidate comes from the Prime Minister’s team in Ang Mo Kio GRC. PAP MP Inderjit Singh’s resignation is not pre-planned and have caught even PM Lee Hsien Loong offguard, after all, where is PM Lee going to find another Indian minority MP for his Ang Mo Kio GRC team?

Next is the unnerving pin-drop silence of the government-controlled media, Singapore Press Holdings newspapers, and the PAP MPs. With the exception of Lui Tuck Yew, not a single PAP MP has spoken about PM Lee Hsien Loong’s new electoral map. It appears that the PAP MPs have declined comments on the new map. The news outbreak of the new electoral boundaries feels like a funeral, and one can smell the climate of doom from the PAP camp.

Compare that to the Opposition, the other political parties are rather chatty and seems in a celebratory mood being exceptionally receptive to media interview requests. the Workers’ Party NCMP Gerald Giam represented his party and expressed optimism saying the WP will field its best candidates in the coming election. The Singapore People’s Party’s Jeanette Chong-Aruldoss told the media she will soldier on in Mountbatten SMC. Singaporeans First party Tan Jee Say said he will work with the other political parties to avoid three-corner fights. Singapore Democratic Party simply start rallying for volunteers on Facebook in response to the news.
