MARRIAGES AND BIRTHS: UP OR DOWN?

More marriages and births
According to the Straits Times news report “More marriages and births in Singapore in 2014″ (Feb 16) – “There were 24,000 marriages involving at least one citizen, the highest number since 1997, said the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) in a statement.
And 33,000 babies were born to Singaporeans, up from 31,000 the year before.”
25,000 new citizens a year
Since we granted about 20,000 new citizens a year, in the last decade or so – if we make an adjustment to the statistics for new citizens – has the true blue Singaporeans’ statistics really increased?
If just 0.4 per cent of the 200,000 new citizens in the last decade got married – it may have accounted for the increase of 808 marriages comparing 2014 to 2012.
Similarly, the number of births actually decreased by 328 comparing 2014 to 2012.
The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 1.25 in 2014 is actually lower than the 1.29 in 2012.

Now, why didn’t our 153th Press Freedom ranking media or the NPTD mention these?
How about giving the breakdown as to how many were from new citizens?
Also, what if we adjust for the new citizens who have left Singapore or given up their Singapore citizenship?
By the way - since marriages between citizens only accounted for about half of total marriages, and citizen grooms with non-citizen spouses was a whopping 74.2 per cent, in 2013 - have these statistics deteriorated further last year?
The number of overseas Singaporeans has continued to increase to 212,200 in June 2014.
The statistics are at best alarming - as the citizens growth rate continues to decline with relatively much higher foreigners' growth rates in the population.
