'This politically correct push is very dangerous': Iraq war veteran claims policy of recruiting devout Muslims to the Australian Defence Force will see soldiers killed at home
  • Iraq war intelligence captain Bernard Gaynor opposes recruitment of Muslims
  • He said the 'politically correct push for Islamic recruitment is very dangerous'
  • Conservative activist was responding to Navy ad featuring Muslim submariner
  • He likened Muslim policy to the 2009 shooting of 13 people at U.S. army base
A former Iraq war veteran says a push to recruit devout Muslims could see Australian soldiers killed on defence bases.
It comes as the Australian Navy encourages Muslims to join its ranks with an advertisement featuring an Islamic submariner called Nicholas.
Bernard Gaynor, a former intelligence captain based in Iraq, said the army's politically correct affirmative action policy was a potential recipe for tragedy.
'This politically-correct push for Islamic recruitment is very dangerous and I'm concerned that we will see Australian soldiers die at home through this push,' he told media commentator Mark Latham.

Iraq war veteran Bernard Gaynor says the recruitment of Muslims to the army is a bad idea

'The PC march through defence is running rampant. They're turning the military from real warriors to social justice warriors.'
Mr Gaynor cited the mass shooting murders of 13 people at the Fort Hood base in Texas in November 2009 by Muslim army major and psychiatrist Nidal Hassan to highlight his argument that Muslims are a danger in the military.

He argued the push for devout Muslim recruits with a different set of beliefs and mini mosques in the army would jeopardise vetting processes.
'I know many people within the military who will be very concerned about serving with a person who's been recruited because of a religious belief, especially an Islamic belief at this time,' he told the Mark Latham's Outsiders program.

The recruitment advertisement cited the testimony of a Muslim submariner called Nicholas

'We want people to sign up for this nation because they love Australia.'
Mr Gaynor was dismissed from the Army Reserve in 2013 for his remarks about Muslims, homosexuals and transgender people, and he is continuing to fight this case in the courts.
The conservative activist has run as a Senate candidate with the right-wing Australian Liberty Alliance and Katter's Australian Party, which suspended him in 2013 for saying he opposed the idea of gay teachers educating his children.
Before that, he served in Iraq in 2008 and 2009 as the captain of intelligence analysis.
His latest foray into political debate comes as the Royal Australian Navy features recruit ads with Muslim men.
